Addiction and Depression & Anxiety
Depression and Anxiety
Individuals suffering from depression and anxiety often self-medicate with drugs and or alcohol to relieve the pain and anguish they feel. Co-occurring disorder refers to a person suffering a mental health disorder, such as depression and anxiety, who then turns to substance abuse in order to block the emotional distress. Physicians believe that a chemical imbalance within the brain, which prevents serotonin receivers from functioning properly, causes feelings of anxiety and depression. The good news is that many mental health disorders are highly treatable with the correct medications coupled with continued therapy.
